Research subject for a potential FP6 project

Microchemical (surface) analysis of grain boundaries in polycrystalline materials of different compositions, grain sizes and microstructure designs and defined interfaces in bicrystals. Thermodynamic characterisation of the segregation processes taking part in the materials with respect to the compositional and orientation changes.

Phase analysis of the bulk material to define the microstructure determination of microchemical changes at grain boundaries. Thermodynamic support of the experimental measurements.

Influence of interface chemistry on energy balance along grain boundaries. Analysis of intergranular fracture along adsorbate internal surfaces with impact to the service reliability of heavy parts used in energy industries.

Contribution to the concept of grain boundary engineering.
