Research subject for a potential FP6 project

The subject of study will be focused on the active participation of autochthonous microorganisms in the natural processes of weathering „in situ“ and the possibilities of their metabolism utilisation in the preparation processes of in-organic substances nanodispersions and composites. Generally, the preparation methods can be divided into two categories:
- techniques of condensation, that utilise the chemical reactions, such as oxidation, reduction, double decomposition as well as some physical processes, for instance irradiation,
- techniques of dispersion in which the principles of grinding, dissolution, spraying, etc. are applied.
The mechanical forces, energy of chemical reactions and physical processes are above all applied in the both categories. The techniques utilizing the energy originated in the metabolism of various species of micro-organisms, that participate in elements cycle of natural biotransformation processes of primary minerals weathering and secondary minerals genesis, can be also assigned to the both these categories.
Up to now small-known or unknown mechanisms are present in above-mentioned environmental processes. They are applicable in the preparation of nanodispersions, nano-materials and composites. According to the recent knowledge, these techniques are usable in the preparation of metallic sulphides dispersions and ferrous compounds from metallurgical wastes as well as from mining acid drainage waters for the production of pigments and sorbents. Fundamentally more extensive applications are supposed in the field of preparation and processing of silicate- and aluminosilicate-based materials as well as in the production of composite materials with required properties.
